1. Which car am I going to get? Will it be a new car?

It is not always possible to promise you a specific car. We will plan you in for a car that is large enough for you and your family. If you need an automatic, we need to know that when you fill in the car form. None of the cars that we have are new, but they are good, reliable, and each time they return to the mission the mechanics check them over completely.

2. Do you have children’s seats?

No, we do not have special children's seats. The Dutch law continues to change and it is not possible for us to keep up to date with the latest regulations. Please check out this government website (Google translated version to English)

3. What do I need to bring when I come to pick up the car?

You need to bring the following:

  • NEVER FORGET: your driver's license valid for the whole period that you will be using a Stichting Hand car.
  • the address and phone number of the house where you will be staying in Holland
  • your gsm number for here in Holland, if you have one
  • the name and phone number of a contact person here in Holland who is authorized to pay bills for you. This is needed in case you get traffic tickets, which will most likely arrive after you have gone back to the field
  • the bond money (350 Euros) in cash
  • the payment for the first month, in cash
  • we ask that you call before you come to pick up the car to make sure that it is ready for you to pick up

4. Can someone else pick up the car for me?

Yes, as long as we know in advance that this is happening and they bring the above information. If a contact person picks up the car we need to have a copy of your drivers license send to us by email or post.

5. What is the maximum period that I can use a car?

In principle, we will not loan out a car for longer than a year

6. How long before I want to use a car do I have to make a booking?

We suggest that you make a booking a year in advance of your coming to Holland. It is always possible that you can contact us nearer to the time you will be in Holland, but we work on a first come first serve basis and we may not have a car for you if you wait too long.

7. Can my children drive the car?

According to our insurance company, as long as they are over 25 and have a valid driver's license they are allowed to drive a Stichting Hand car.

8. Can I loan the car to my brother (for example) or someone else?

We prefer that you do not do this, if you do, you must realize that you would be liable for any damage that they put on the car.

9. Is there a charge per kilometer?

No, there is no charge per kilometer. If you drive more that 10,000 kilometers, you will have to pay for a service on the car. If you bring the car back to Stichting Hand to do this then, at this moment, that costs 45 Euros. If you decided to have another garage do the service, you are liable to pay all the costs.

10. Is there a tow ball on the car?

Some cars have a tow ball, but not all of them. We would like to know, when you are filling in the form, if you intend to tow a caravan, as not all of the cars are licensed to do this.

11. Can I put a roof rack on the car?

No, we ask that you do not put a roof rack on the car.

12. Can I use the car outside of Holland?

If you desire to drive outside of Holland, you must state this on the car form when you request a loan car so that we can plan you in for a car that is suitable.

This is because from October until April, some countries (e.g. Germany, which you almost always cross when going abroad) require winter tyres and we need to know where and when you are going outside of Holland. We do not have winter tyres for all of the cars.

13. What if I want to cancel my reservation?

You are able to cancel your reservation with no charge up to two months before the date that you had promised to pick up the car. After that, there will be a charge for a one month period, if we are not able to loan the car out to another missionary. The costs that you pay cover only the cost that we make on the cars, hence when you are using the car all the costs are covered. If the car is sitting at the mission here, we must pay the cost out of the gifts that come to the mission.

14. Can I give a gift to the mission?

Yes, if you desire to give a gift to help with the work of Stichting Hand, that would be much appreciated. More information...

15. I have used a car from Stichting Hand before, do I still need to fill in the form?

Yes, please, as there maybe a change in your request. For example, maybe your family has increase in number or maybe you are going outside of Holland this time. Any information that you can give when filling in the form helps us in planning a car for you.

16. What does it cost to use a car?

As from January 2011, you are required to leave a bond of 350 euro. This bond money will be returned to you when the car comes back in the same condition as it left. Also you will need to pay a monthly charge of 170 euro (at the most). This covers standard car insurance, passenger insurance and legal help. Also road tax, administration costs, maintenance costs and roadside assistance are included in this charge. If you drive more than 10,000 kilometers, you'll have to pay service costs of 45 euro. (Also see #9.)

If you have other questions, please feel free to e-mail us and ask them. We are here to serve you in any way that we can and with the Lord's help, we do our best.
